About me

I am beginning my 2nd year at Grovetown High School this year and my 12th year of teaching. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology from Auburn University and a Master of Science degree in Biological Sciences from Clemson University. Throughout my education, I have traveled around the world researching population genetics in marine invertebrates in Alaska, Japan, Russia, Chile, and Antarctica.

My passion for science has led me to become a teacher because I think it is important for students to realize the opportunities science has to offer rather than just the memorization of facts. I want to share my research experiences and my passion for science to inspire a future generation that appreciates and understands how science works. Science education is about self-discovery of the world around us. Thus, using a variety of methods in the classroom, including cooperative learning, guided inquiry, and authentic assessments, and emphasizing science literacy, I hope to develop life-long skills in effective oral and written communication, collaboration and creativity that are important not only in science careers but in any workplace. I hope to break the stereotype that scientists are old, nerdy, and unsocial and, therefore, open up the possibility that science is an exciting and attainable career option.
